MEET THE TRUSTEES

Chairperson
COLLEEN TUUTA

Colleen was born in Opunake and is of Taranaki, Ngati Mutunga, Ngati Mahuta, Scottish, Irish
descent and much, much more.

During the past 25 years Colleen has worked extensively with numerous organisations including
the New Plymouth Women's Centre, Taranaki Business Development Board, Rape Crisis,
Women's Refuge and Tu Tama Wahine o Taranaki. Currently Ms Tuuta is the Specialist Adviser for
the Parihaka Needs Analysis Project and on a national level is the Chairperson for a research
project which is examining the potential of women in small to medium size businesses. This is Ms
Tuuta's second term as a trustee and was appointed to Chairperson of the Trust this year.

Deputy Chair
KEMP BROUGHTON – (J.P BE FIPENZ)

Kemp Broughton is a Justice of the Peace, has a civil engineering degree from Canterbury University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Professional Engineers of NZ.
Kemp is currently the deputy chair of the TSB Community Trust and a director of the TSB Bank. He is also a member of the Building Industry Authority and the Chartered Professional Engineers Council. Kemp was also a former CEO of the Stratford District Council and a former director of Taranaki Healthcare.
Kemp and his wife Anne are dairy farmers and thoroughbred bloodstock breeders.

Trustee
ALLAN WILSON (J.P)

Allan was born and raised in Thames and completed his education at Ardmore Teachers’ College where he met his wife Lynne. Allan started his teaching career in Te Kuiti and then moved to Thames.

In 1970 Allan and Lynne came to Taranaki planning on a 3 year stay, and 34 years later they are still here. After 18 years as Mokoia Principal Allan headed into town to Hawera Intermediate where he is now Deputy Principal.

Participation in the community has always been an interest of Allan’s:

  • A long involvement in both Rugby and Squash
  • Vice-President and Committee member of the South Taranaki Club
  • Past President of Normanby and District Lions
  • Staff Representative on the Hawera Intermediate School Board of Trustees for 15 years.


In his spare time Allan enjoys gardening, reading, and spending time with his 4 children and 11 grandchildren.

Trustee
SELWYN METCALFE (JP)

Selwyn is currently a Hawera Real Estate Agent and Director of his own Real Estate Company. Fellow of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand. Executive member and a past President of the Taranaki Branch of the Real Estate Institute since 1985.
Justice of the Peace. Past President and member of the Hawera Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. President of the Oceania Olympic Wrestling Association. Immediate past President of the NZ Olympic Wrestling Union. New Zealand Representative as an Official at four Commonwealth Games. Member of the Sydney Olympic Games Organising Committee for Wrestling.

Selwyn’s sporting interests include Olympic Wrestling, Rugby and Cricket.
Hobbies include conjuring and magic, Maori artefacts, coins and banknotes.

Trustee
SUSAN HUGHES (B.A, LIB, Dip. Bus Studs, FAMINZ)

Susan's early life was on various Army bases throughout New Zealand and her first knowledge of Taranaki was when she was sent to boarding school at St Mary's Diocesan School Stratford. >From there her education was completed in Auckland where she graduated from the University with degrees in English and Law and returned to Taranaki to practice. Susan  was  a partner in the New Plymouth Law Firm of Govett Quilliam  for 18 years but in 2006 commenced practise as a barrister and was this year appointed Queens Counsel. 

Trustee
ALEX BALLANTYNE (B.A. Soc)

Alex and his wife Maree were both born and raised in New Plymouth and have lived in Eltham for the last 22 years. They have been married for 29 years and have 4 grown up children.

Alex is very proud and honoured to serve on the TSB Community Trust: the task of disbursing funds to worthy causes sits well with his personal ethos of practical Christianity.

Alex’s working life has covered a wide gamut from factory and farm hand work through to business and social services. Through these avenues Alex has gained a good understanding of the needs and aspirations of our diverse Taranaki community, and his academic pursuits (B.A. Sociology) have given him a sound analytical and theoretical base.

Alex is presently employed part-time by St Joseph’s parish Eltham and the NZ Police, and as a current District Councillor (STDC) and Chairman of the Eltham Community Board, as well as an active member and trustee of numerous other community groups, “I feel I have a good grasp of current community developments and activities”.

ED PARKER MBA, Dip Dy Sci & Tech, BSc(Chem)

Ed Parker moved to Taranaki in 1990 to work for Kiwi Dairies (Now Fonterra). Currently he is a senior consultant with Aretê Consulting Limited, working predominantly in the Oil and Gas Industry.

Ed has a keen interest in strengthening community. He was General Manager of the community trust WISE (Waitara Initiatives Supporting Employment) for 3 years. The Trust’s purpose is to provide employment and to improve housing. He has also volunteered in various leadership roles working with children and youth.
Ed lives in Waitara with his wife and two children.

Trustee
STEVE CORKILL

Steve Corkill was born in 1954 at the Opunake Cottage Hospital and educated locally. Steve served an electrical apprenticeship in Opunake and spent the next eleven years working overseas.
On his return with Rosie to Opunake in 1986, they have since married and have two sons, Michael and Andrew.
At this time Steve established the business “Corkill Electrical” and went on to win the Taranaki Medium Business award in 1999. Since sold, Steve is now building “Corkill Systems” specialising in development and manufacturing of automation equipment for dairy sheds.
Steve is a current member of Opunake Lions Club, Trustee to the Opunake Sports & Recreation Trust and a Justice of the Peace. In the past Steve has been a business mentor, STDC Community Board member and judge for the Business Awards.
Steve is a keen surfcaster and skier.
“I am passionate and proud of “the coast” and Taranaki.”

Trustee
HAYDEN WANO

Hayden is presently the CEO of Tui Ora Limited a Maori Development Organisation based in New Plymouth. Hayden has over 25 years health sector experience including senior management positions in both the Public and NGO sectors. Hayden is currently Chairman of Taranaki District Health Board and in addition to his operational experience he also has wide governance experience.

Trustee
MARISE JAMES (Chartered Accountant)

The Trust welcomes Marise to the Board as of July 2008.

Born and raised on a dairy farm in Taranaki, Marise completed her accounting qualification through Polytech in Wellington in 1981.   Marise met her husband Bryn, while working in Wellington and they returned to New Plymouth in 1985 where they began a career in dairy gfarming, working their way through the traditional sharemilking path to farm ownership on various properties around Taranaki.   After 21 years involvement in the sector, they have recently sold their dairy property.  

During this time, Marise has worked as a rural accountant for Staples Rodway in New Plymouth and is now a director of the firm.   Special areas on interest include rural accounting and business planning. Through her involvement in farming, she has also held various governance roles in the rural sector and is currently also a Director of Landcorp Farming Limited and Farmers Mutual Group.   Marise has also been recently appointed to the WITT Advisory Committee.

Marise has two adult daughters and personal interests include travel, sport and home.
